No-Shave November- Don’t shave for a month

Forget about shaving in November, isn’t it cool? The idea of ‘No-Shave November’ is more convenient this year now because most of us are working from home and it is easier to manage the bearded look. Those who love to flaunt their mustaches and flowing beards can happily continue doing so throughout November. Every year since 2004, men in several countries are rejoicing the unconventional look of ‘No-Shave November’ gloriously.

What is the goal of ‘No-Shave November’? It is simple- don’t save for a month. The campaign was started in 2004 to increase awareness about cancer. When people get affected by cancer, they lose their hairs during chemotherapy sessions. The foundation of No-Shave November wants people to embrace their valuable hairs. No-Shave November, which is a non-profit organization, aims to increase cancer awareness, raise funds, and support cancer prevention and research.

The No-Shave November was in tradition for a long, but a Chicago-based Hill family decided to reinvent this tradition and that is how the No shave November story started. A good share of the amount is gone in the grooming of beards and mustaches. You can donate this amount to support the cause. This non-for-profit organization wants you to ditch the razors just for a month and donate your shaving monthly expenses to the cause. The foundation puts a good amount of donated dollars for cancer research and provides free information to cancer patients. The donation amount starts from a little amount of $25.Technology has a key role to play when it comes to cancer cure. Prevention is the best thing one can do. The Seven Bridges Cancer Genomics Cloud, funded by National Cancer Institute, is all set to explore public datasets like The Cancer Genomics Atlas (TGCA). The TGCA is one of the richest datasets which has 3 different tumor types or subtypes, comprising thousands of patients. The Oregon Health and Science University along with Intel has developed a collaboration of Cancer cloud to work towards curing cancer. It is one of the most brilliant collaborations so far, which is made to work on curing cancer with the help of cloud collaboration.

The DNA alterations which drive the growth of a specific tumor are being identified by Advanced Genomic Testing. This works by providing information about genomic mutations that are usually unique to the growth of any specific tumor. The increased patient participation along with the involvement of big data analytics will certainly provide a big help to combat the deadly disease cancer. Along with the advancement in genomics and sequencing, the treatments are going to be more precise and better. The first and foremost thing is the gather data related to the cancer patients which will take place by encouraging the cancer patients to contribute more. If the patients register for clinical trials, it would provide a better way to contact the potential patients for research.

Make the most of No-Shave November today. After October is dedicated as Breast Cancer Awareness month, November is focused on cancer and men’s health awareness- testicular, prostate, and colon cancers. The No-Shave November foundation and Movember Foundation have been able to raise funds to support the research and awareness for cancer. So, men- put down your scissors, razors, and clippers for the rest of the month.

Kamala Harris- The lady with many firsts

My mother would say: Don’t sit around and complain about things. Do something. So I did something”. –Kamala Harris

Born in Oakland, California on 20 October 1964, Kamala Harris is the first woman who is also the first black and Asian American to become a vice-president-elect.  When she was five, her Indian-born mother and Jamaican-born father got divorced.  She was primarily raised by her Hindu single mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who was a cancer researcher and single rights activist. She was very much engaged with Indian heritage during her visits to India with her mother. Ms. Harris has also said that her mother had also adopted Oakland’s black culture. Kamala Harris had graduated in Political science and Economics from Howard University in 1986. Post that, she earned a law degree from Hastings College in 1989.

Harris has also served on the Select Committee on Intelligence and Judiciary Committee along with her other assignments, where she was being known for her prosecutorial style of questioning the witnesses during hearings. This also drew a lot of criticisms and interruptions from republic senators. Harris is 56 and she has seen many firsts. Apart from her position as the vice-president-elect, she was the first woman to become the first woman district attorney for San Francisco in 102004 with 56 % of the vote. Throughout her professional life, she has advocated about and worked for reforms related to progressive tax, healthcare sector, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Indeed, she has broken the glass barriers after becoming the vice-president.

In her acceptance speech for Vice-Presidential candidate, Harris has given a shout-out to all her “Chithis”. In the Tamil language, they call ‘Chittis’ to aunts. She also talked about her Indian-born mother who worked as a cancer researcher. Even the women in Thulasendrapuram village in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, the native village of US vice president-elect Kamala Harris, which is the native place of Kamala Harris, drew a special rangoli to congratulate her. The whole village had celebrated her win by distributing sweets and putting posters.

In her speech, she said about her mother, “When she came here from India at the age of 19, she maybe didn’t quite imagine this moment. But she believed so deeply in an America where a moment like this is possible. And so, I’m thinking about her and about the generations of women — Black women, Asian, White, Latina, Native American women who throughout our nation’s history have paved the way for this moment tonight.

Joe Biden: His life and perseverance

When Brack Obama had called “the best vice president America’s ever had” and a “lion of American history”, who knew Joe Biden would be the President of US someday? Why the whole world is talking about the president-elect of The United States, Joe Biden?

When Joe Biden will take over the White House in January 2021, he will be the president who possesses immense knowledge about  foreign policy. In addition to his records, he has served as a vice-president to Barack Obama. Along with this, he has held leadership positions on the foreign policies in the senate.  During his campaigns, he clearly stated that he sees only the United States, not the blue states or red states.

Joe Biden has toiled himself a lot to reach the position where he is right now.  He used to wash the school windows so that his family could afford the tuition fees of his dream school, the prestigious Archmere Academy. He says that attending this academy was his deepest desire. Not only he had been a good student, but a standout receiver in the football team. His coach remembers and says, “He was one of the best pass receivers I had in 16 years as a coach”.

During 1973 to 2009, he served as one  of leading foreign policy experts where he also advocated for strategic arms limitation with the Soviet Union, promoted peace and stability in Balkans.

In 2008, Barack Obama and Joe Biden defeated  Sarah Palin and John Mccain. For 2008 election, he recalls,

This is an historic moment. I started my career fighting for civil rights, and to be a part of what is both a moment in American history where the best people, the best ideas, the how can I say it?—the single best reflection of the American people can be called upon—to be at that moment, with a guy who has such incredible talent and who is also a breakthrough figure in multiple ways—I genuinely find that exciting. It’s a new America. It’s the reflection of a new America.

In 2017, he was honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction which is the nation’s highest civilian honor. This was present to him by Barack Obama in surprise ceremony in White House. In 2019, he told the news to everyone that he was running for presidential election in 2020. Announcing Kamala Harris as Joe Biden running mate for vice-presidentail election, he said, “I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked Kamala Harris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate”.

On November 7, 2020, Bidden was announced as 46th president-elect with 74-million plus votes. Now this 78-year old is all set to become the oldest president in history of the nation.
